About Us

Club Building Argotti-House-Cropped-1000

The Club was founded by a few staunch Conservatives. They used two rooms in a small premises just around the corner in Fore Street, St. Marychurch. These premises soon proved inadequate and in October 1885 the St. Marychurch and Babbacombe Conservative Club was formally opened in a new larger property in Hampton Place. As the popularity of the Club grew, it was enlarged by the addition of the adjoining house.

In 1929 a large house called "Argotti" in Manor Road was purchased. Alterations were made, a billiard room for three tables added, a nine hole putting green installed on the front lawn and a small car park made. As cars became more popular so did the demand for a larger car park and unfortunately the putting green came to an end. The stone steps shown in the image still remain as the main entrance to the club.

The club benefits from a large car park which is privately managed. Members can purchase an annual car park pass at £25 per annum.  Those members or visitors that do not own an annual pass are reminded that they must enter their car registration number into the i-pad at the bar on every visit and pay the daily parking rate of £2. Failure to enter your details will result in a fine. Members Wellbeing

Can you help?

Would you like to join the Committee? We meet just once a month and very occasionally, if a special meeting is required. Each person does something to help, making sure everything runs as smoothly as possible and the club remains a great place to visit!

Please consider joining us, we're very considerate of the heritage of our club while at the same time aiming to ensure it remains up to date and thriving in the years to come.

If you are available to help around the club with particular tasks or at certain events held throughout the year, but do not wish to become a Committee Member, we would still welcome your support on a casual
basis and we thank the members who already do this including Debbie & Chrissie who, outside of their paid work, volunteer lots of extra time to help out!

Please contact Debbie our Club Secretary or speak to a member of the Committee or you can email smbcc@marychurchconservative.com to let us know if you can help.

Thank You
